goal 6: hobby materials
TIME TO COMPLETE: 1½ MONTHS
The final goal of your 100-item challenge is to review your hobby materials. All those odd bits and pieces such as notepads and journals are included with this goal. I am not a great hobby person but I do really love drawing and painting, so these art materials are among my “must haves.” Sketching outside is one of my enjoyments.
Hobbies can be addictive—once you take up one, you just want to start more. But if you get bored quickly, it will mean that you have a lot of half-finished projects around. You may have tried a ceramics course, making jewelry, or maybe something like stained-glass work. Photography is an amazing hobby but you can acquire a lot of equipment that you may not get around to using. Perhaps you thought you were going to develop your own black-and-white prints and bought all the materials but then never had the time? All this kit is taking up space in your home. If you are an amateur musician, you probably have several instruments that you have bought over the years, but do you still play them all? When did you last play that guitar or keyboard? Online auction sites and secondhand stores are ideal places to sell on unwanted expensive hobby items. Or you could donate some cameras or musical instruments to amateur clubs, which would really appreciate them. Helping people can be incredibly rewarding, and can make you appreciate how lucky you are and how much you have in your life.
RELINQUISHING HOBBY MATERIALS
Again, use some heavy-duty trash bags. Label one “Amateur clubs or friends,” and another “Hobby equipment to sell.” For any old craft or hobby items, label a third bag “Hobby materials to throw out.”
Sort through your inventory (see pages 40–43), moving through your “can go” list, your “don’t knows,” and, finally, check through your “must have” pieces.
